Mickey Mouse versus Nick Faldo

In Workshop 7 of Mastering Strategy, we home in on Disney's core competence. In doing so, we address the long-term fit of ESPN...nice to have, but not a must-have. It seems that ESPN's business model has been losing ground to multiple competitive pressures, mostly from substitute channel (read: online). Lacking proprietary content, ESPN is experiencing customer attrition at increasingly faster rates. Looks like it might be time for Disney to get back to nurturing and cultivating its core competence of character-driven family entertainment.
